bitmaps "vanish" off page

I often find that seemingly trivial changes to a document, which do not
include deleting the anchor paragraph, result in bitmaps (and other graphics)
vanishing off the page.
are there solutions to preventing this, or at least forcing word to display
some sort of flag

The "solution" is to develop a better understanding of how graphics are
treated by Word in a text-based environment :) There is some excellent
material available at the link below.

All floating graphics *must* be anchored to a paragraph and be on the same
"page" as the para to which it is anchored. If you delete the anchor para
the anchor shifts to another one & if that para is on a different page the
graphic goes with the anchor.
