bizarre edit/tracking problem

Here's a poser: I received an edited manuscript, editor's comments in the
margin balloons, as well as the deletions and insertions. The editor had
numbered the comments within the balloon, then made the comments.

I can see everything but the numbers. Her comments show up fine, but I'm
missing the bracketed numbers also within the balloon. Neither are they in
the bottom reviewing panel. I'm using Word 2002 (in Windows XP Pro). I've
downloaded various upgrades from the MS site--no help.

The numbers are there: they appear on my son's computer (Word 2003) and on
my old computer, Word 2000. Should I try Word 2003, or am I simply missing
something?
