bizarre formula results using an off-sheet cell

When using a cell from a different sheet in a workbook than the one
containing the formula, excel x inserts a completly different cell
instead of the one you select, and also moves the formula containting
this off-sheet reference to a different cell on the sheet containing
the formula.

ie... a workbook with two sheets, and the second sheet is to have a
calculation that includes a number that exists on the first sheet.
Sheet-2; select cell to contain formula, type "=" then switch to
Sheet-1; select cell that contains the number you wish to use on
Sheet-2. Hit the return or enter key. When I do this there is
nothing in the cell that I started the formula by typing "=", but
there is a cell on the sheet somewhere else that now has that formula,
but with a different Sheet-1 reference than the one I selected. I
have reloaded my software, and performed the updates, and still am at
a loss. Excel v X (service release 1), mac OSX v 10.2.6

Hmm..

I can't replicate your problem using the above steps, and I've used
similar steps many times without that occurring.

First - Does this happen in any workbook, or just the one? Any
sheet/range or just the one above? Is a named range involved in the
source cell or just a number (shouldn't make a difference, of
course)? Is the "somewhere else" consistent or random? Do you have
any macros, especially event macros running?

Second - with XL closed, delete the Excel Settings (10) file in
your preferences folder (~:Library:preferences:Microsoft, where ~
represents your home directory). Restart XL. Still have the problem?

Third - when you "reloaded (your) software" did you first run the
Remove Office application found on your install disk?

Yes, it happens with any workbook, no named range involved, just the
formula "=Sheet1A1" by the above decribed methode.

I have performed this several time, and again after reading your post.

I have also used the Remove Office app, and re-loaded the software yet
again, to no avail

I'm having a similar problem, and it is bizarre. It happens to me only
in one specific file, and it always inserts the same "wrong" reference,
and often I end up crashing. Plus, it seems to always bounce back to a
particular worksheet whenever I move around.

Did this get resolved in any way?

Sure sounds like workbook corruption.

Try Copy/Pasting your worksheet info into a new workbook (don't move the
sheets themselves).
