black bar across text

Whenever I try to type I get a black bar which makes the
type not readable. I have tried adjusting background,
etc, but nothing using white seems to correct it. I have
to change it to gray background to get readable text.
What do you suggest?

Check Format > Font and make sure that Strikethrough is
not selected.
