Black is no longer black -- Why?

In OL 2002.

All of a sudden, when using HTML format for email, the color black is
no longer a real black. It's lighter, more like a shade of gray,
almost a purple hue. In fact, all of the colors seem to be a less
saturated / vibrant and less sharp and crisp, but it's only in
Outlook, and it's only in HTML format. When I'm in Plain Text format,
the black is still very black, and the characters are sharp and
crisp. Also, the colors in other software are just as perfect as they
always were.

Does anyone know why the sudden change of color saturation for
Outlook?

My system is a newer Sony laptop, and the screen is very good.

Nope. I'm not using Word as the editor, nor stationery or themes. Is
it possible for the whole color palette in OL to be lightened by some
change in the color palette somewhere else in a MS Office application?

The only change I've made to my system in the past week is an upgrade
to IE 8.0 and to Firefox 3.0.6.

It's possible, but unlikely. Go to tools, options, mail format, fonts - is a
gray color selected?

Everything in OPTIONS is where it's supposed to be. I guess it's
always possible that it's simply my eyes, but it certainly looks
different. Nevertheless, life could be a lot worse. I'll live with
it.
