Black sine wave all across the page

I have a 400+ page document (all text) and I'm getting a black wavy line
(looks like a sine wave) all the way across the page. I can't delete it or
get rid of it by changing the formattting - never seen it before in my 12+
years of using Word.
What is it and how do I get rid of it?

Is it moving or is it sitting still? If it's moving, and you see it
elsewhere, then you probably have a defective monitor or video card.

Do you see it in any other documents?

What version of Word is this? If you start Word with the /a switch
(winword.exe /a), does the problem still occur?

I'm tempted to say "Save in .rtf format" then reopen and see if the problem
is fixed. However, a 400+ page rtf text file is HUGE.
