Black square formatting mark – Word 2007

I have applied Keep with Next to a paragraph which has the Normal style
applied. The black square formatting mark has appeared. What does this mark
signify in Word 2007?
My understanding in older versions was that it meant a style had been
applied, e.g. Heading 1. This is not the case in my example, the paragraph is
still using the Normal style
Any clarification to help me with the complexity of 2007 would be
appreciated.

The square does _not_ mean that a style has been applied. It means that one
of the paragraph format options "Keep with next," "Keep lines together,"
"Page break before," or "Suppress line numbers" has been applied, either
directly or through a style. Since many of the built-in heading styles
include "Keep with next" in their definitions, the square appears in those
headings -- but, as you've seen, it can also appear in other places. This is
not new behavior; it's the same in Word 2007 as in earlier versions.
