Blank date field in mail merge

Meadmaker

I am trying to create a mail merge in Word. My merge source is Excel. I'm
having trouble with a date field. If the field is empty, null or blank, I'm
not sure which, the merge output is 12:00:00 AM. If the field is populated
the output is correct i.e. 9/25/2004. I would like the output from the empty
field to remain blank. I've tried many things with no luck. Any suggestions?
Thx

Insert the field in a test document. Note EXACTLY what is produced then in
your merge document test for that exact result eg

{IF {Mergefield fieldname} <> "12:00:00 AM" "{Mergefield fieldname}"}
