When I first open Word, the blank document that automatically opens is in landscape orientation. Anyone know how to change the default?

You've most likely saved the setting to your Normal template. Try this
first... Go to Format> Document, Click Page Setup, change the Orientation to
Portrait. After clicking OK in page Setup click Default in the first dialog
& confirm Yes to saving the change.

If that doesn't correct it you'll have to open & modify Normal.dotm or
replace it altogether - post back if you need directions or have a look at
the info located here:

Start Word, and close all other documents.

Find your Normal.dotm template and Open it using File>Open.

It should be in /Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User
Templates/

Don't double-click it, that will only create a new document: you want to
open the template itself.

Then go to File>Page Setup and set the orientation to portrait by clicking
the left icon.

Now Save, and immediately quit Word to ensure that your change is saved
back.

That'll fix it.

Cheers
