Blank field until data is entered

I have a currency field and a number field in a form that
I would like to be blank until data is entered into them.
How can I get this to happen? I have tried using = "" in
the default value, but as soon as the primary field has
data entered in these fields populate with a 0. Thanks
for the help.

please don't multi-post.
it sometimes takes hours for somebody to answer a question posted in these
newsgroups; when you post the same question more than once in the same day,
you just make more work for everybody.
if a question isn't answered within 24 hours, it's usually because 1) nobody
understood it, or 2) it's a common question that's been answered repeatedly,
so the post-er could have found the answer by Googling.
