Blank file not blank

When I try to start a new doc by clicking new blank file, the screen opens a file that was on clipboard. I can edit-select all-delete- then I have a blank screen for new doc. but then when I click the blank file icon again, the same old clipboard file appears again.
I have removed and reinstalled word, updated Norton and done full virus scan, scanned with Spy Bot and AdWare by Lavasoft all to no avail.
I tried to restore system to several earlier dates but after processing, error msg "system cannot be restored"
When I followed Norton steps for virus removal which included disabling "system restore" I lost all of ealier restore points so can't even try that again. Any ideas?
