To get a "blank line" between *any* two paragraphs, never press Enter twice.
This inserts an empty paragraph, which takes up just as much "space" in a
Word document as a full one. That is, Word has to remember all the
formatting for that paragraph just as if it contained text, resulting in
increased file size. Moreover, empty paragraphs can cause problems at the
bottoms and tops of documents because they are not suppressed as Space
Before/After is.
The correct way to add space between paragraphs is to define some Space
Before/After in the Format | Paragraph dialog. A quick way to add 12 points
Space Before (the rough equivalent of a blank line) is to press Ctrl+0.
Ideally, the space should be added to the style rather than individual
paragraphs, since using styles rather than direct formatting also reduces
file size.
