blank space in merge

Using Microsoft Office Word 2003, Office XP for PC. Merging letters, in
address fields, if there is no MI (middle initial) in MI field, it leaves a
blank space. I have tried doing the IF clauses on the toolbar. I choose
"IF" MI field is blank, then it asks me to put in text in place of MI field.
It does not work. I do not want that blank space in the middle of the first
name and last name. What am I doing wrong?

{ IF { MERGEFIELD MI } = "" "" "{ MERGEFIELD MI } " }

with no space between the above field construction and the next mergefield.
Use Ctrl+F9 to insert each pair of field delimiters {} and Alt+F9 to toggle
the display of field codes.
