Block Unsafe Expressions prompt

NetworkTrade

Hi,

When I open some Access.mdb applications I am sometimes prompted with
"Do you wish to block unsafe expressions?" I simply press 'no' and keep on
working.

and with others I am not prompted.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the reason for this.

I am wondering when/why this prompt is presented and then what, if anything,
one should be doing to stop it from occuring.

thanks

Tools|Macro|Security Set it to "LOW" and it will go away.

ummmm.... in my Access2002 there is no Tools|Macro|Security

there is Tools|Macro| without a security option

and there is Tools|Security - but I don't see a setting to lower anything
for this boot up....

Tools|security does not cut it. You are looking for
Tools|Macros|Security. As far as I know, running 2003, it exists the
same way in 2002. Make sure you open a database that is giving you that
error message, without any macros or code autorunning that might change
the menu.

It will present you with a box titled Security Level and three radio
buttons.

strange. My Access2003 still does not have Tools|Macros|Security either.

I have 02 and 03 on the same machine...not that this matters...

Looking at Help it agrees with you to lower setting of Macro Security
(though doesn't tell you where or how...)

Someone else sent me a link to info concerning an upgrade of Jet
needed...perhaps this upgrade will add the Macro/Security too... remain a
little baffled at the moment....

Nudging in....

Sometimes 'Tools|Macros|Security' isn't present, so you have to reset your
Menu Bar...

1. Go to 'View|Toolbars|Customize...'
2. In the window that opens up, select Menu Bar then
click 'Reset...' to the right.
3. Then go back to 'Tools|Macros|Security' and change
your settings to 'Low'.

Should work in 2002 and 2003.

bingo!

amazing that something like this is obscurely hidden in this way...much
thanks..

now I have the strange quandry of doing what Help suggests i.e. lower Macro
Security even though it states in the security Window of being "Not
Recommended"...

or I can leave at Medium so that I can then decide "if I wish to run
potentially unsafe expressions" - as if how can one make that decision if
they don't know if it is harmful and of course who would say yes if they did
know....and since it flashes up with every opening it offers no insight as to
any danger...ay carumba....

If you set it to medium, it is going to ask you these stupid questions.
Unless you answer them properly, you are not going to be able to run
any macrosor VB code. Period. If you ever intend to run code or
macros, you will end up answering "yes."

While the idea is to prevent virus's from being transmitted in this
fashion, I have never seen a virus that propogates this way. As long
as you are only running your own databases, or at least, those you
trust, you should be perfectly safe leaving it at low. This is the
default i use with about 50 users, have for years, and while these users
do smetimes tend ot be virus prone, never seen it cause a problem.

If you ever find yourself downloading a database from the web, you just
turn on macro security first, then load it and check to see if there is
anything nasty.
