blocking new file extensions causes errors when closing word & out

Because of compatability issues between machines, the registry policy
settings have been changed to disallow new office document formats to be
saved. Office has been configured to save to the old formats as standard, so
the policy is only to catch people who try to save in the new format.

Unfortunately both Word and Outlook have problems with this policy. Word
will save documents normally, with no problems (as long as they are not new
format) and saves as .doc (not .docx) as standard. When closed word brings
up an error
"You are attempting to open a file that is blocked by your registry policy
setting."
Which then refers to a kb article
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=922850#appliesto which is of little help.
Word brings up this error whether anything is saved or not, and whether
anything is typed or not.

Outlook has a similar issue, and comes up with the same error if an email is
sent.

I would much prefer to keep the changes to the registry policy settings, so
please could someone help me with this issue? I am using windows XP service
pack 3 (fully updated) and Microsoft office 2007

I can only respond to the Word closing issue because I don't have Outlook
'07 on my system.

Even though you have defaulted Word to save as a .doc file (Word 97-2003
format) the template file "Normal.dotm" is still saved each time you close
Word. The old template file "Normal.dot" is not saved for Word '07. You
need to have the policy changed to allow that extension to be saved.

I would assume that Outlook has a similar file that it saves that is a
different extension than Outlook '03 or earlier versions had.

Ok, that helps a little, it should be possible to change the the default
extension of the normal template in word. Does anyone know if outlook does
the same or a similar thing, and if its possible to change the "normal"
template?

To the best of my knowledge you can not change the Normal.dotm extension in
Word as it is "hard wired" in the coding. You will need to change your
permissions to allow that extension.
