It was removed from the product because Microsoft's research showed that few
people used it.

Something that doesn't seem to be understood by the public is that Microsoft
uses the information it gets from the Customer Experience Improvement Program
(CEIP) to help make decisions like this.

[In Word 2007, this option is at Office button > Word Options > Trust Center >
Trust Center Options > Privacy Options > "Sign up for the Customer Experience
Improvement Program". In earlier versions, at the bottom of the Help task pane,
click the Online Content Settings link > Customer Feedback Options. Information
about what the program does is at
http://www.microsoft.com/products/ceip/EN-US/default.mspx.]

The trouble is that many people don't know or care about CEIP, or they turn it
off because they don't want Office to "phone home"; and a lot of business IT
departments turn it off because they don't want the network traffic. Although
the Microsoft designers know that CEIP data represent only a small part of their
user population, it's still a large part of the hard data they have about how
people use the programs.

The lesson is that if there are features you really like and use a lot, it can
to your advantage to keep CEIP turned on so that Microsoft can learn about you.
