blue markings appear in multiple spots in document

whenever i open word theres a blue marking where my cursor is and whenever i start a new paragraph or indent these blue markings appear. i dont know how to get rid of them or how i got them but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated

What you are seeing are called "non-printing characters" which indicate what
accounts for spacing & breaks in your document. You can't "get rid" of them
but you can hide or display them at anytime by using the ¶ button on the
Standard Toolbar or by keying Command+8. They are an indispensible tool for
analyzing & editing purposes. It would be to your advantage to learn what
