Bold attribute out of phase with text?

In Word 2003 when I click the BOLD attribute (BOLD is shown with a boxed
outline around it) any selected text becomes UN-BOLD and vice-versa. The
BOLD attribute is out of phase with the appearance of the text. Italics and
underline work correctly. This used to work properly. How can I fix this?
