bolding highlighted words bolds all text -- why?

Suddenly, when I highlight a few words then select bold, ALL of the text in
the document changes to bold type. This is the first time I've seen this
happen. I haven't changed programs or anything. Any ideas on what is
happening?

It sounds like the style being used is set to Automatically Update. See if
