Book Print Fails manual duplex with even pages in reverse order.

While setting up printout of an 8 page document for book print, I selected
manual duplex. Everything worked as expected except my printer (HP) turns
the pages over and I need to print either the first part of the duplex, or
the last part of the duplex in reverse order. Without this reversal, I must
shuffle the first print to reverse the order before printing the second half
(then reshuffle the result back).
To solve this, I attempted to select reverse order for the second half
(even pages in reverse order). This failed, the second half printing just
fails (a very short message box flashes and is GONE leaving me no clue).
Requesting the odd pages in reverse order also fails but it gives me one page
out before failing.
Since Book Print places two pages on each sheet, it would work for a
printer that did not invert the paper for output and flipping the pages for
manual duplex would reverse the expected order for the second half. My
printer flips the pages one at a time and I need a way to tell Word to
reverse the order of printing of the second half of the duplex output.
Anybody got any clues???
