I am wondering if it is possible to link several word
documents to a book. (like in adobe frame maker).

I have several chapters, some of them quite big, and want
to have one basic doc with all linked sub-docs in it.
Important is that chapter and page index are updated
correctly throughout the whole "book".

How can I achieve this in a convienient way? thanks for
answers

You can do this with Master document, but it is not advisable as this
facility is notorious for destroying documents. Quite simply it doesn't work
correctly. However, Word can handle huge documents - of hundreds, even
thousands, of pages. Keep it together.
