I am trying to figure out how to Ref a bmkDate. I used bmkDate on page 1
and now on page two, I want to use Ref. I placed the cursor in the proper
place and went to Insert>Field>Ref and selected bmkDate (all the field
options are blank) and said OK. I did not see anything, not even the
bookmark "I" symbol.
Should I have typed "Ref bmkDate" without quotes some place?
As usual, thanks in advance from the newbie,
Jim

The basic look of a REF field is:
{ REF "bmkDate" }

Try simply typing it (without the braces). Then select what you typed and
press Ctrl-F9 to make it a field. Then press F9 to update the field. (It
shouldn't have any bookmark brackets.)

Have you checked in the bookmark dialog to make sure you bookmark is still
there? They are very easy to delete by mistake, even when visible. If it is
there, click on the GoTo button and make sure it encloses your date. Where I
am going to put a given piece of information on a line by itself I usually
create a style for it, based on my Body Text style. Then I use a StyleRef
field to retrieve it instead of a REF field. That way I avoid the problem of
accidentally deleting a bookmark. I definitely do this with the date and
addressee's name in my letterhead templates. Then I use StyleRef fields to
repeat that information in my header.

Hope this helps. You may want to check the MVP FAQ on vba. There's an
excellent page there on working with bookmarks in vba.

Thanks. I believe I follow your instructions. Looked at the FAQs but have
a stupid question. When I do the Ref or StyleRef, do I still insert a
bookmark? I do not think so, because I am creating a field. Please
advise.

The Ref field requires a source bookmark - not as a part of the field but as
a place from which to get information to be displayed by the field. If you
want the date typed on page one to repeat elsewhere you bookmark the date
that is typed in (or is in a CreateDate field) and use a Ref field anywhere
else you want to repeat it.

The StyleRef field requires text somewhere in the document formatted using
that style. If there is more than one instance of such formatting, there are
rules as to which one is displayed by the field, which can be changed to
some extent using field switches. When I'm using a StyleRef field to
substitute for a Ref field, there is only one instance. That style will also
be set up so that the following paragraph will be in my Body Text style to
avoid creating multiple lines in the referenced style.

Look these fields up in Word's help files.
