bookmarks in text boxes resetting when printing

I have some bookmark cross-references in text boxes in my documents.
Yesterday they began resetting to '1' when I print the document ( part or
whole). I have worked out:

-if I have a bookmark reference outside of the text boxes, they don't reset
(this is not a practicable solution long term)
-it doesn't matter which printer I use
-it now does it to all my documents, including new ones created to test this.
arghh...
