The best way to learn how to use Word is to use it. Word documents begin
with a default setup. That means that the document has an already setup
margin spacing, font, and line spacings, and etc. Depending on what you do
with the Word system, you could start by creating a document -- open new
document and begin typing yourself a letter that is one page long. Then
print it out and see how it looks to you. There will probably be things
that you want to change about it. Go to the Help section of Word and look
for the help you need. You can even put in a search for things that you
want to do. If you cannot find what you want in the Help section, you can
come here and put your query to the pros who have been there, done that.
There are books that can guide you in your work with Word, but there is
nothing like learning by doing.

Hello Carlo,

I don't know of any yet, and a quick check of Google didn't show up anything
near the front end for "Word 2004" or "Office 2004" in publications.

Are you completely new to (1) Word, (2) Word on the Mac, or if you have an
earlier version, what are you moving from? And what level of expertise do
you want to reach? Depending on your response, I can recommend something
appropriate.

Cheers,

--- SOME TIPS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL ---

* WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep re-visiting the
newsgroup for several days after the first response comes in. Sometimes it
takes a few responses before the best or complete solution is proposed;
sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a better answer
can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of posting are at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm

* QUERY GOOGLE FIRST: Before posting your next question, search Google
Groups
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search?q=group:*mac.office.word) --
the topic may have been comprehensively answered already.

* THE MS NEWS SERVER IS QUICKEST: If you connect directly to the Microsoft
news server (msnews.microsoft.com), you will see your replies within
minutes; going through your ISP's news server could take much longer, and
web-based access can also be slow -- often 8 hours, and up to several days.
For settings for the MS news server, see www.entourage.mvps.org

* POST BACK TO THE NEWSGROUP TO GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK: Please post all comments
or follow-on questions to the newsgroup for the benefit of others who may be
interested. If you need to send an e-mail to me directly (although that
would be exceptional), remove the uppercase letters from my address above.
E-mails with attachments are automatically rejected.

* YOUR SOLUTIONS AND VIEWS *ARE* WELCOME: If you know the answer, even a
partial one, to a question you see on this newsgroup, feel free to jump in
and answer it -- there's no monopoly on answering here, and (except for an
occasional visit by someone with "Microsoft" or "Mac Business Unit" in their
signature block) we're all volunteers! Feel free to comment or ask a
question that supplements someone else's question, too.

* COMING BACK PAYS DIVIDENDS: I've found no better way of improving my
knowledge of Word than visiting this newsgroup. I've compiled some notes
that include ideas from this newsgroup and elsewhere, and also list other
sources of information about Word. Titled "Bend Word to your Will", they are
downloadable free at www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/WordMac/Bend/BendWord.htm

* BACK UP NOW: If anyone is still reading down this far, here's a question:
if your settings files were corrupted right now, would you have an
up-to-date backup from which to retrieve your document settings and
customizations? It's best to back up your Normal template and all your Word
settings files on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, if you
also want to protect against theft and fire, to store them in a different
building. More information is at
www.word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/BackUpYourWork.htm and in "Bend Word to your
Will".

"Office 2001: the Missing Manual" still seems to bear some relevance, though
of course the new features of Office like Notebook won't be covered.

Office 2004 only came out about 6 weeks ago! I think you can expect that
there will be a 2004 version of Missing Manual, as there was for Office v.
X. Also there will soon be a Word eBook in the "Take Control" series
published by Tidbits (there's already one for Entourage). Just hang on a
bit.

We are hanging...and our fingernails are getting sore. The program has
been out for six weeks, but authors and reviewers must have had early
copies.

Any ideas on how much longer we'll have to wait--for any help at all?
This site is a great, but I'm of the old school that likes a book,
something I can take to the reading room or fall asleep on.

Perhaps by making fewer assumptions, one will be wrong less often. We
deal not with Microsoft but with their PR people, and we are completely
at their mercy. They knew I was to write a review for TidBITS followed
by a possible e-book. Yet I got my review copy literally weeks after
paying customers started to get theirs. Also, try to keep in mind that
reviewers and authors, and their editors, and their publishers, are
people - people with lives, who are presently going without sleep trying
to create something correct and useful for you in a timely fashion. If
you want to help, ask questions (so I'll know if I'm providing helpful
information) instead of this uncalled-for personal attacking and
whinging. People with your kind of attitude, quite frankly, just make me
want to throw in the towel and do something else with my time. m.

Please don't do that! Not everyone's the same.

Let me depress everyone :) Since I write books for a living, and I have
even written one about Word, I think I should gently reset your
expectations...

It takes about 12 months to write a useful book on Word. So the first thing
we can say about any book that appears six weeks after Word does is that the
Author has never seen the version of Word he or she is writing about. This
does not enhance the accuracy or the relevancy of the content much :)

The most comprehensive and up-to-date information about Word is in the Help
File. I have yet to see a book that contains as much information as the
Help does, and my publisher certainly didn't want to entertain the idea of
printing that much paper (about 3,500 pages...).

A book that size becomes very difficult to use (which is why when people ask
for my phone number and I say "It's in the phone book" I always get a blank
stare...).

If you spend half an hour really researching how to use the Help in Word,
particularly the Search function, you will get much more information: it's
much more likely to be correct, and it updates whenever Word does :)

You want to know the *real* reason Microsoft doesn't print a paper manual?
There it is: It can't be done. It takes too long to write it, and the
users couldn't use it if you did write one, because it's too big!

Hope this helps
