I am working with John McGhie's CreateATemplate manual. Problem is the
border options spacing keep changing and cannot lock to the settings
recommended by John.

I also cannot figure out page 14 on the page format settings using the
temporary section breaks.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for your quick reply. I use Word 2003 with Windows XP.

The border options spacing problem I am referring to relates to inserting a
bottom border line under the text in the headers. The section in John's
template manual is on page 10 second paragraph which talks about preventing
lot of "noise" by putting a line under the header. I can't get the settings
to remain at the numbers specified in the manual which are "2 points from the
text at the bottom and 0 points at the top, left and right". I tried this on
2 different computers and keep getting the same problem.

The use of the word "temporary" is my own choice. You're right, I don't
recall either seeing the word "temporary" anywhere in the manual.

I now realize that I was confusing the 3 extra section breaks in the Section
Breaks section on page 13 with the 3 "temporary" page breaks on page 15 in
the Front Matter Headers section which are later deleted.

The manual is rather difficult to follow, especially for those of us who
aren't as skilled as you and John McGhie are in Word. There are no screen
shots that can guide us in following along with what is happening. We have
to carefully follow each word and phrase and sentence to make sure we don't
miss an important step. I have been working on my own manual complete with
detailed screen shots so I can use it to visualize the processes to make sure
I won't miss important steps and settings.

I still am struggling with the section breaks and page numbering on pages 13
and 14 and with the page breaks and the master headers and footers on page 15.
I can't get my template to be like the template provided with the manual.

I also have problems following the page number insertion instructions on the
last 3 paragraphs on page 14.

Why set the numbering format to lowercase Roman and then set "Start At" to 1?
Shouldn't "Start At" be set to "i" instead of "1"?

Then there is the sentence that says " We don't actually want to insert the
page number, it's already there.". If the manual says the page numbering is
already there, then why do we have to do the page number insertion routine
again?

I will still keep trying to learn this process of setting up a template which
is a very important topic to learn so I can save time in preparing documents
and reports. Thank you for your help.

George

Sorry - Although I certainly haven't memorized John's article I am familiar
enough with it to know that: 1) Spacing settings for borders are referenced
in several contexts, and 2) Nowhere does the word "temporary" [nor any form
of it] appear in the article.

You also don't mention what version of Word nor do you reference a previous
thread that might help clarify the problem(s).

If you can be more specific about what you are attempting to do as well as
what does or doesn't happen as expected I have no doubt that someone will be
able to help address the issues.
