borders and lines

Hi out there,

I am using Microsoft 98 for Mac.

I have encountered a problem with borders and lines. I can make the
border above, below and on either side of paragraph, but cannot make
line through middle of cursor.

For example, I can't make a line like this: -----------------
I would use the drawing tool, but this is inconsistent and doesn't
look as good as using borders, which align perfectly with the margins.
Also, I've noticed that sometimes with drawing lines, they don't
always sit perfectly in the middle of the paragraph. Sometimes
they're a bit high or low.

The line is either above or below my sentence. I don't know if this
problem is related or not, but when I click on the line icon (from
which one can select line thicknesses), all of the lines are greyed,
meaning that I am unable to select any of them. Wierd! Frustrating!

Might someone have a bit of advice for me?

Well, a border by definition I should think goes *around* text, so you
shouldn't expect to get one through the middle of the cursor. And since I
don't think you can apply a border on the same line as text, I can't see how
anyone would notice it being above or below the sentence anyhow....tad
confused about what you are looking for here, you may need to explain
further....

However, from the Border dialog, I inserted a Horizontal Line, then selected
it and applied Subscript (via Format | Font), which lowered it a bit. Will
that do you? For some reason it's a grey line, though...

It also looks to me as though you can get more precise location of a drawing
line by holding down Option as you hit arrow keys, have you tried that?

Which line icon is greyed out? In the Border dialog or off the Drawing
Toolbar? From the drawing toolbar, if no line is selected the line menu
will be greyed out.

If you select the line and go to Format> Horizontal Line, you can change the
line color to black or whatever.

Ah...who knew? My documents don't have lines....that whole response was a
journey of exploration for me. But actually, I can't find a Format |
Horizontal Line command? Oh, turns out it only shows up in Online Layout
view.

Learning more about Word every day...

Thanks, Beth.

Something's wrong. I see it in Normal and Page Layout views as well. Are
you sure? You did have the line selected, right?

I'm positive I did have it selected, because I saw the change in the menu
(the very bottom entry) without changing the selection. But now I'm not
getting Format | Horizontal Line in any view, definitely with it selected,
and the bottom entry of the Format menu is changing all over the place
(Insert Text Box, Object, AutoShape....). Fresh prefs and a fresh Normal
did nothing, but remind me I haven't backed them up since May! :( and
further tell me that for some idiotic reason, apparently I'm not set to
backup prefs! Back into beginning applescripting go I, in shame.

Not a big deal, since I don't use this feature anyhow. Will worry about it
later.

Hey Beth,

Suddenly discovered what this problem was--user error :) . I *didn't* have
the line selected, I was unclear on the distinction between highlighting the
space where the line is and actually selecting the line itself so that black
boxes and lines appear around it. (it looked selected....)

Good to know, in case the issue crops up again.

Cheers,
