Borders around numbered lists

Two questions really...would appreciate help with either:

When I try to create a single border around an entire numbered list, word (2000) creates separate borders around each numbered item in the list. How can I prevent this?

Also, I have been trying to put a border around a paragraph which breaks from the bottom of one page to the top of the next. However, word will not allow the border to 'break' across the pages. Rather, it creates two separate boxes (one at the bottom of the first page and one at the top of the second page). Without repositioning the paragraph so that it is entirely on one page, is there a way to create a single border around it?

Are there unnumbered (empty) paragraphs between the numbered ones?

Yes. However, in realtion to numbered or bulleted lists won't this always be the case?

Hi Brucycles

Sounds like you use empty paragraphs to space between items? Try using the
paragraph space above/below settings instead - this will also avoid blank
paragraphs ending up at the beginning of a new page and spoiling the layout.

However, the general method of getting a border to apply to several
paragraphs of different types is to make a base style which includes the
border, and base the other styles on that. So for a numbered list you would
base both your List Number and your List Continue styles on the same
bordered base.
