Bottom of Footer in Word 2004

Footer Margins are not allowing me to set the proper distance from the
bottom of the page.

My printer cannot print closer than 0.46 inches to the bottom - using
the default 0.5 inches in Format | Document | Margins I can set what is
labeled as 'From Edge' to 0.5", but the document seems to take this as
the beginning of the Footer and the bottom of the footer remains at the
very edge of the page.

This ISN'T right. Any ideas?

It may be a little misleading, but if you're talking about the Footer Box
bottom edge, the bottom edge of the page is where it should be.

The measurement in the Page Setup dialog determines how close the last line
of text *in* the box is allowed to be relative to the page edge (allowing
clearance for character descenders. Note that the insertion point in the
Footer field is in the upper - not the lower - left corner. If you type more
than 1 line/paragraph of Footer content, the top edge of the box & the upper
lines will rise up on the page and the last line will remain at the
specified distance from the edge - .5 in this case.
