brackets in Excel 2000

Can anyone tell me why I cannot use brackets in Excel
2000? This option was fine in Excell 97. For example, if
I simply just click on a cell and entered (12,500.00)as
soon as I go to the next sell the brackets disappear. I
checked under format cell and look at the
options "number" and "custom" but no luck...

When you looked on Format|Cells|Number Tab under the number category, did you
see two options:

(1234.0) (in black)
(1234.0) (in red)

Did/does one of them work?
