I can't say I've seen this before, although it's possible for a corrupt file
to do most anything. If you close & save then quit Excel does the link
remain listed when you launch Excel & reopen the file? If you select any of
the cells does the Formula bar show it as being linked?
Try this if it does:
Select & copy the "linked" content then use Edit> Paste Special - Values to
paste it back into the same cells. Perhaps that will break it loose.

Most likely the link was created by *pasting* as a link. This type of
linking (basically cell-by-cell rather than as an object) cannot be set to
update manually.
Breaking the link doesn't cause anything to happen other than the data is no
longer "connected" to the original source. The link selected in the list
when you break it, however, should be removed from the list of links (but
the content in the file doesn't get removed). Are you saying that the link
info *remains* in the list even after you confirm breaking it?

I can't seem to break links in a workbook. I go through the process
starting under "edit...links", select Break links, It gives me a
warning, which I OK and nothing happens. One thing I notice is that
the update button is selected as Automatic and Manual is dimmed or not
selectable.
Yes, the link info remains in the list, it is the only one, and when I
sesarch for the link in the workbook, none is shown. So I am at a
real loss as to what to do.
