Break Links

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have switched to Mac
I have a couple of files which are giving me trouble. Working with them is dreadfully, painfully, unbearably slow.

I'm 99.9% sure it has to do with Links.
The files have dead links, or inactive links. Whatever.
I go to Edit->Links and choose to break the link.
But the link doesn't get removed from my list.
There are no references within my file to the linked file.
The linked file doesnt' exist on my computer.

I'm sure that any move I made on the file, Excel is trying find the link 'in case' anything needs to be updated.

How do I remove these links????

Can you explain in more detail? For instance, are you unable to locate the
actual links? Do you have hidden worksheets in your workbook? Are you
relying on data from a networked drive that boots up first and creates the
link?

If you are just trying to find the links, first you need to unhide all of
the worksheets. Second, try running a find on "[", the bracket that begins
the file name used in the link. Remember, that a link can be virtually
anywhere in a file, including a header or footer.

Hi Joe -

I cannot locate the actual links in any formulas, headers, footers, etc.
I do not have hidden worksheets in my workbook
I am not relying on data from a networked drive
I searched for [ and it was not found in the workbook.

I searched from text that Excel thinks is in the filename of the linked file, and cannot find it in my workbook.

What's next?

Do any links show in Edit-Links? If so you can break them there. Did you
look in the defined names for an external reference? Did the file come from
a PC and possibly have macros? Are there custom menus or buttons that link
to a macro file?

Bob -
As I wrote in my initial post, the problem is that the link DOES appear in edit-links, and REFUSES to be broken. I 'break' it, but it doesn't break (altho I get the warning). I try to open the source, but it won't open (duh, it doesn't exist). I try to change the source of the link (as I've done when this problem came up with some other files), but the change won't 'take' effect.

The links do not appear in formulas in the file, or as a defined name.
There were no macros in the file when I brought it from my PC
There are no custom menus or buttons that link to a macro file.

The only scenario I have come up with is:
- I received Spreadsheet File A from a co-worker
- I copied and pasted info from File A to my File B
- My file C is properly linked to File B
- File C has the problem with a fictional link to .... Text D
- File B is fine

I have written to my co-worker, to see if they have a file on their computer with Text D as the filename, or a named portion....

Truthfully, I don't think any of them know how to link files, or name ranges....

Hopefully a coworker will know what the file is, send it to me, and then I'll be able to break the link.

Other ideas?

Bob,

I am having the exact same problem where i have a file, which links back to a coworkers file. Regardless, I am trying to break all of the links (and see them when i go to edit links); however the links cannot be broken. Please let me know if you are able to find the solution and i will do the same.
