The small squares are called "Control Handles".
If control handles appear on an object, then yes, you can ungroup. Do it on
a copy

Begin by setting the paper size and margins: every other measurement and
position on the page is calculated from the top left corner created by the
margins you set at this step.

a gorgeous brochure using a template but want to change the fill colors. It's
the color blocked one with orchid fill and yellow squares. I can't select
just one of the areas - it's a big group. Can I ungroup? And are the small
squares called weights or is that something else? I'd like to learn how to
make my own design.. Thanks!
