My template code stores per-document options in document variables;
this code has been working for at least ten years. I save about 15
simple configuration values in each document based on my template.
According to a bunch of reliable sources, the June 8th Microsoft
update to Word (KB969604) messed up the XML handling in .dotx files,
and screwed up document variables, so that you can no longer
accurately retrieve the values of variables after you've closed and
reopened a document. The workaround is to save docs in Word 2003
(.doc) format, but i've got a lot of users who don't want to do that.
If MS is going to fix this soon, I'll stall. But if not, then I've got
to write an alternate solution for managing per-document variables --
not a giant task, but one i'd rather not take on if I don't have to.
Does anyone have info about the status of this bug?
