Browser opening itself since installing Office 2003

Since installing (upgrading to) Office 2003, my web browser something is
causing my web browser to open itself, even when nothing is active.
With all programs closed the browser now opens itself after an interval
as short as 4 or 5 minutes. I close the browser and it reopens after a
period of time.

I'd like to know what to adjust, apparently in Office, to stop that from
happening. If it matters, my default browser is Netscape 7.1, This OS
is Windows XP Home.

Does the browser navigate to anywhere?

Are you by chance on dialup?
Thanks,
Eric

It opens to my home page - which is my.netscape.com.
I have a broadband cable connection, so always connected.

I wonder if registration could have anything to do with it. When I
installed Office 2003 I had to Activate it, which I did, and it offered
the option to Register. There was no explanation of what registering
does and I did not do it.

Registration should have no effect. What version of NS are you using?

In Internet Explorer, TOOLS | INTERNET OPTIONS | CONNECTIONS, is the "never
dial a connection" box checked?

Yes, that box is checked. I'm using using Netscape 7.1.

I've done some experimenting. I changed the system so that IE 6 is the
default browser, expecting it to then open unexpectedly, but possibly to
take some action that Netscape couldn't do. To my surprise the Netscape
browser opened anyway after several minutes had elapsed. I can't
imagine what has changed during installation of Office 2003 that would
cause this to occur.

Netscape 7.1 has an option to leave itself loaded in memory to save
startup time, or to turn that option off. Because this is a very fast
machine I've had that option off. My next experiment was to turn on the
option of leaving Netscape loaded. When I do that the browser no longer
opens up unexpectedly. Most users probably have Netscape set to load
at boot time and to leave it booted, so they would not notice the
strange behavior I've experienced - unless there is something unique and
unknown about my environment.

I will raise the question in a Netscape newsgroup.

I had Office 2003 "repair" itself and the problem went away! To do the
repair I went to Control Panel > Add/Change > Microsoft office > Change

I found that when the process was finished that Netscape was no longer
my default browser, but of course it was easy to change that back.
