Browser redirect accessing Tasks, Projects on some PC's

G

gerrys

I am running into a problem on several computers accessing the tasks and
projects pages on PWA 2003. When accessing the tasks or projects I get
redirected to the home page for PWA. The client is a windows 2003 server
machine. This works on other windows 2003 server machines. I have updated the
MDAC and reinstalled the OCX controls. The following message flashes before
the redirect on the project page.

"There are no projects to display. You either do not have permission to see
any projects in this view or there are currently no projects in the Project
Server database. Contact your server administrator."

The project page displays correctly on the other computers.

If I disable the PJGRID11.ocx control the page will not redirect.

On the resource page I get the following message.

Microsoft office Project Web Access 2003

An error occurred wile trying to access the resources stored on the
database. Either there are too many resources, or the Project Serve may not
have the correct DSN configuration. Contact the server administrator.

I can access all the other pages on the Computer.

All the pages work correctly on other PC's.

If I disable the PJGRID11.ocx control the page will not redirect.

On the resource page I get the following message.

Microsoft office Project Web Access 2003

An error occurred wile trying to access the resources stored on the
database. Either there are too many resources, or the Project Serve may not
have the correct DSM configuration. Contact the server administrator.

All the pages work correctly on other PC's.

Thanks.

Make sure that there are no browser addins installed on the non-working
systems such as the google popup blocker. Also make sure that IE discussions
bar is not activated. See if that helps.

Something is interfering with data call. The only one on your list of
add-ins I'm not certain of is the send to bluetooth, but I've got this one
installed myself, without problems. Have you reviewed the browser security
settings? Do you have access data across domains enabled? Automatic logon
with current credentials? Do these systems have different versions of virus
software or different virus scanning options enabled?

Gary

Yes I have Access Data across Domains and Automatic Logon with current
credentials enables. I have the same version of Mcafee Virus Scan on both the
working and non working systems. I have disabled the virus scan to test.

The non working browser is 6.0.3790.1830 Cipher Strength 128-bit Product
ID:69712-640-21766-45006 Update Version:;SP1

The working browser is 6.0.3790.1830 Cipher Strength 128-bit Product
ID:69712-640-2176676-45548 Update Version:;SP1

I have run all updates avaliable on both systems.

Thanks

I have been experiencing this same problem for over 6 months now. Noone has
an answer. By the way, mine is only on one single user account. That
account originally worked but the user had his account deleted and recreated
in the domain. It has been hosed in Project ever since. I am probably going
to have to plunk down the $250 to MS for a service call.

Some of us read the news board on Microsoft directly where the time to live
for these messages is 30 days. You replied to a message, without quoting it
back. So your first post amounts to a "me-too" post offering nothing about
your particular situation and the behaviors you're seeing. Worse yet, I
can't even see the problem description you're referencing. Next, you
"ASSume" that your problem is the same. All we can say for sure is that
*you* think your system is displaying the same symptoms as a previous post.
None of this is adequate foundation for diagnosis. Also, this problem, in
general, has been discussed many times.

So, if you're not willing to invest the time to describe your problem, don't
expect people to jump in with answers. Shelling out the $250 is a lot easier
than typing as much of an explanation as I've given you here.

Ouch!

You are right and I am wrong. The frustration got to me. I apologize.

Here is my situation.

Tasks, Projects and resources grids are not displayed for a particular user
that had to have his account recreated. The browser gets redirected back to
the users home page just as discribed in this and about 7 other posts that I
have seen so far. I have gone through the following steps to remediate the
problem.

1. Checked to see if that user can log into PWA from other machines.
Result: Only one machine that I set his old account up on works. Every other
machine does the same thing. Other users can access PWA from these same
machines and view everything that they are supposed to.
2. Re-installed MDAC 2.8 on the 2k and 2.81 on XP machines (mixed
environment). No effect at all for anybody.
3. Checked to see if we were having a popup or activex blocking problem.
Nope. All toolbars removed and discussions feature disabled. All security
settings on the browser the same for the users that can access the tasks,
projects and resources pages and this particular user.
4. Made the user an administrator on EVERY part of the Project Server
System. No effect.
5. Recreated the user account, reassigned the user to every task in over 5
projects and republished every project. No effect.
6. The user CAN use Project Pro to access projects, resources etc through
the server...well that's half the battle.
7. Now for the real test. I created two other NEW users in the domain and
added them to the project server. PWA does not work correctly for them
either.

This seems to be a NEW USER issue. At least in my case. I can't seem to
make a new user anymore. The old ones seem to work fine.

There is a COM+ error in the Application Log of the server (single server
install).

I assume that this is why those user accounts are corrupted somehow. Any
ideas?

Once again, I am sorry for my hissy fit. I hope that this time I have
included enough detail.

Looking up that COM+ error on the Knowledgebase got me to Running the
EditSite tool and resetting the DSN. Running the test gives me passes on
everything BUT the database. Result information is that "The Project user is
not a member of the MSPRojectRole"

A

Anton Federkiewicz

OK,

The DSN reset, Views Service Reset and passwords are all correct and the
Edit site tool says that all tests pass. When I create a new user....the new
user account still gests redirected to the home page when viewing projects.

Anton:

Well, this detail is certainly helpful, but quite unique in my experience.
Are you using Active directory? Does this happen when using any
administrator account? Are you logged into the machine as a domain
administrator?

A

Anton Federkiewicz

Thanks for the response Gary,

The user accounts are AD accts but are not synched with the AD via Project
Server synch function. Would that help? I just define them one at a time as
Windows accounts. Any administrator account creating a user will create the
corrupt users. I have a feeling that one of the accounts used to pass
through the ProjectServer to the SQL DB is not being admitted to the DB. Is
there any way to check this with a table querry? The EditSite tool says that
access is OK. Maybee they are not in the right DB role? I think our DBA
might have taken out something and won't admit it...LOL. Application guys
always blame DBA's....it's SOP.

I am not nor will I ever be able to get domain admin rights. That privelege
is reserved for a very few people. I am very tempted to wipe the server and
start over. I have already archived the projects in preparation for the
wipe. Do you think that it can be avoided?

G

Gary L. Chefetz [MVP]

Anton:

Reinstalling is certainly an option. It sounds as though the SQL connection
is not the issue, but I haven't run into this particular behavior before.
Are there any events being written to the Application or Security event logs
on the server when you create the users or when the users try to access the
page? Have you tried rebooting the server?

I am seeing this same behavior, but the circumstances are slightly different.
I was just brought in to look at this problem. I was provided the following
information:

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

<User> cannot access PWA Project Center through Internet Explorer. The
screen displays and then after 1-2 seconds reverts to the Home Page.

At this point in time we believe that the issues may be caused by a damaged
or corrupted file in the operating system.

Here’s what we’ve done:
Deleted and reinstalled Active X controls for PWA
The problem persist even with my ID so the problem is on the workstation
itself
Installed all Windows updates
Upgraded Office to Office 2003 from Office 2002
Checked for Browser Search Objects (BSO’s)
Swept the workstation for Spyware
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm told that this problem exists for this user (and the note's author) only
on one particular desktop PC. Neither person has this problem on their
individual notebook PCs.

Based on a KB article, the Project Server was upgraded over the weekend, but
that did not help.

Thinking that Windows XP perhaps had been corrupted, I de-installed SP2, and
then reinstalled it. I then applied most of the outstanding Windows Updates,
and all of the outstanding Office Updates. The user has Project Professional
2003 installed on the PC, but I'm told that Project Server does not use the
local installation for serving up data.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,

Has anyone made any further progress with solving this issue?

Thanks,
Mark..

Mark,

Here's what I ended up doing.

The system in question was a Dell Precision 330. I found another Dell
Precision 330 that was unused that had the same hardware configuration, so I
transplanted the hard drive from it to the problem system. I then changed
the CMOS parameters to boot the problem system from the alternate hard drive,
and then had the user log in. The result was that the aforementioned
problems were not present when booted off of the other drive.

As a result we re-built the system from scratch. The problem was therefore
worked around rather than being solved.

Sorry I don't have any better answer. I haven't seen any better suggestions.

Thanks Derek. We've actually narrowed it down to be a network issue. When
accessing PWA on the office network, we get the errors intermittently. When
connecting from home to the same server via VPN, the problem disappears - no
other changes were made to the workstation. Really strange. Wr're using AD
integration with Windows passthrough authentication.

Hi,
I was facing the same problem on one of the user's PC and after
uninstalling Microsoft FrontPage from his PC the problem was solved.

Best regards,

I am also experiencing similar issues. There seems to be a problem on any
page that has an ActiveX grid control. I actually found a KB article that
mentions exactly the errors I am seeing, found at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q175804/. Unfortunately none of the
resolutions is relevant in my case, but I still wanted to share that. I'm
also experiencing something similar to what MM is seeing in that the errors
occur when accessing PWA via a client workstation, but if I bring up PWA
while on another server, I do not see the issue.
