Browser-safe colors: how important

I am in the process of designing a color scheme for the website. How
important is to keep to web-safe colors? I want subdued grayscale menu design
and find the grayscale selection in web-safe palette quite limited.

The website will feature a lot of digital photographs. I will use Adobe
Photoshop's "Save for the Web" feature. How can I ensure that my menus and
colors will also display correctly?

Thanks.

I never worry about it, and everyone tells me that the photos on my site
look okay. Don't waste your time. Different browsers and different computers
are going to display the colors differently no matter what you do. And Macs
will generally display photos brighter than PCs.

Web safe colors were only important when everyone had 8-bit graphics cards.
Thankfully, that time is behind us!
