'buffer overrun detected'

Today I was attempting to download a song and since then everything I try to
open on my computer gives me this message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime
Library; Buffer overrun detected. I've tried everything to get rid of it. I
tried to restore my settings and even attempted to download something from
the microsoft website
(www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-028.mspx) but that did not
help either. I continue to get this message when I attempt to open internet
explorer and everything else. My e-mail seems to be unaffected right now.
Please help!

Run an up-to-date virus scan.

I think I took care of this problem, for now, but now something else that
I've been having problems with is giving me more trouble. I received an
e-mail a long time ago that I believed to be a Microsoft update (I've
discovered since then that it wasn't) and I tried all the suggestions to fix
it but kept receiving 'error messages'. This has affected my ability to
download updates as well not letting me install things from the internet or
my new anti-virus software. Whenever I try to open any office documents, as
well as many other things (specific icons in my control panel, programs in my
start-up menu, and many others) I receive these error messages. I can often
'override' the message by right-clicking and clicking on 'run as', but this
hasn't even been working all the time recently. The exact message I get is
"Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and
then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click
Search." Someone suggested a while ago I download a specific update but it
will not allow me to download anything. I am using Windows XP but this is
happening no matter the program I am trying to open. Please help.

I also just discovered when trying to open Internet Explorer that I get an
error that it cannot find the document, like I posted just a minute ago.
However, if I right click on the IE icon, click on 'run as' and unclick the
box that says 'protect my computer and data...' I can run IE--but if I do not
unclick that box, I get the 'buffer overrun detected' that I have been
getting. Please help, this is so frustrating and it is finals week so I am in
desperate need of a working computer.

Download Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) and use it until you get your
problems straightened out. You will not be able to run Windows Update or
Office Update, but you can get safely on the web to find malware and spyware
removers.
