Buffer Overrun Word 2003 Service Pack 2

Hello,

Lately I experience Buffer Overruns with Word 2003 documents with Office
2003 NL Service Pack 2. This error never occurred, before the Service Pack 2
was installed. Word is in Dutch interface with Dutch Spelling and Grammar.

Exact message:
<
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Buffer overrun detected!

Program: ...am Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's
internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must
now be terminated.
This is a very annoying error because Word 2003 always terminates and
there's no possible way to edit the documents.
So I edited some of the documents with Office XP UK on an older computer
with help from a friend. After some trial and error, I found out that when
you have
Spelling and Grammar disabled in a TextFrame with some lines of text, this
error doesn't occur anymore.
Under menu: Tools -> Language -> Set Language -> Do not check spelling or
grammar.

I have several questions:
Is this already known as a bug?
Where can I find a fix for it, because I don't want to edit all my documents
in Word XP, just to be able to open them in Word 2003?

I've not seen or heard of this one. It may, of course, be a Dutch specific
bug. However, have you tried running a Detect and Repair operation (under
the Help Menu in any of the Office apps)?

Hello,

I did the Detect and Repair thing. It did gave a message that some
installation file was missing <CC561401.CAB> and asking for the Office 2003
CD. But putting the CD in resolve that message.
Detect and Repair did not solve the Buffer Overrun error however.

I googled around abit and I found a MS KB artictle similar to this error.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555123/en-us .

The particular file mentioned in the article I could not find. But I found
other files:
MSGR3EN.DLL (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\1033)
MSGR3GE.DLL (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\1031)
MSGR3FR.DLL (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\1036)
MSGRNL32.DLL (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF\1043)

I renamed the file MSGRNL32.DLL to MSGRNL32.DLL.old (assuming that this one
is used for Dutch Spelling and Grammar). And followed the remaining steps
mentioned in the article.
Now I don't have the Buffer Overrun error, then again I also don't have the
Spelling and Grammar check.
But now I can edit all my documents in Word 2003. Most are letters with the
letterhead in a TextFrame. I am through half of my documents now, turning off
the spelling and grammar in the TextFrame.

When I rename the file back, I don't have the annoying error anymore for the
edited documents.

It's kind of a hassle, but the workaround works, faster than using the much
slower computer to edit the documents.

Thank you for your response.

Mossier.

I suggest that you call your local Microsoft agent and report this as a bug
(this newsgroup isn't patrolled by MS staff, so they won't see this post).
You can find the correct local number by looking at Help, About Microsoft
Word and clicking on the Tech Support button.

Same problem here with the dutch versions of word 2003 (SP2) and Word XP
(SP3). I can confirm mossiers workaround to get things going again, but
ofcours a structural solution would be better.
