I just submitted Entourage 2004 Help/Send Feedback on Entourage to report
the following bug as well as to recommend a more logical toolbar replacement
for the aA button for received messages.

In the meantime, is there a workaround for decreasing font size if the aA
button is grayed out after reaching maximum font size and refuses to work
when one clicks it while holding down the option key?

1. Please fix Entourage 2004 bug in increase/decrease font size in received
Entourage messages. I clicked on the aA font size button with option key
down and it failed to reduce the size of the font. On replication, I found
that when the font is increased to maximum size, the aA button is grayed
out and option fails to work. Option works as long as one does not reach
maximum font size.
2. Please replace in future versions the single aA button with a pair of
buttons, one for increasing size, one for decreasing size. Safari 1.2.2,
for example uses a wider button icon on its toolbar with a | A in which the
| mark between a and A is faint, but visible.

(a) Press Command-Option-Minus Sign
(b) Go to Edit -> Decrease Font Size

Yes, I see this behavior with the button in messages opened in their own
windows. The Preview Pane button doesn't have this problem.

I can't replicate this. When I get to maximum font size clicking the A
button just beeps at me but doesn't dim. So there's no problem reducing font
size with option-click. This is true both for plaintext and "simple"
(text-only) HTML. Complex HTML messages - at least those whose pictures I
haven't downloaded - need to be refreshed (switch to another message, then
come back) after clicking A to even display, but again follows the same
pattern.

I think there must be something unusual about the messages where your A
button dimmed.

Nah. Why bother - it requires more screen real estate, and it's easy enough
to use option-click. Each operation also has its own menu item in Edit
menu, and each has its own keyboard shortcut (you'll see them there). That's
enough. Interestingly, when you (or I, at any rate) get to maximum font
size, the Increase menu item in Edit is dimmed and its keyboard shortcut
inoperable (no beep) while Decrease still works.

I missed that, Mickey.

Thanks very much, Mickey. Command-Option-Minus sign doesn't work for me but
edit/decrease font size does the trick.

Although there are workarounds, it's in the interest of consumers, where
possible, to standardize the use of toolbar buttons and minimize the need to
memorize additional keyboard commands. And as long as there is a bug in
the existing button, it makes sense to consider the recommended change.
Incidentally, the Safari a|A button combo does not take up that much more
toolbar space. Respectfully, Norm

As long as there is a bug in the existing button, it makes sense to get the
bug fixed. If the bug is fixed, then I see no need for a second button.
Using an option-click has long been the convention on a mac to perform a
related, but modified, function to a normal click.

Real estate on the toolbars is limited enough without adding an extra
unnecessary button. The bug needs fixing, not working round.

Sorry, I meant to say Command-Shift-Minus Sign. On the Mac, the
corresponding keyboard shortcut displays to the right of the menu item.
