I can't locate a "bug report" page at Microsoft. This is as close as I could
get.
I'm a professional book indexer and I use the XE (index) field in Word all
day long.
In certain conditions (when a field has been copied and new text is inserted
into the field ... I haven't figured out how to reproduce the bug all the
time, however), the text in the XE field will not be formatted as "hidden".
When this happens, the text will appear in the final output of the document
.... a clear problem.
I HAVE figured out how to solve the problem when it is noticed. (Part of the
problem is that the only clue is the dotted line indicating that the text is
hidden underneath the text. If you don't notice this dotted line is missing,
the bug adds unwanted text into the final document.) When the dotted line is
missing, simply delete or undo all the text that is not hidden, cursor away
from the field (to the line above or below, for example), and then cursor
back to the field and resume insertion of text. The text will then be hidden
with a dotted line as it should be.
I speculate that the coding error causing the bug is that an attribute
flagging text as being part of a field isn't reliably set under some unusual
set of circumstances.
