Bug in Seq field in Word 2000

I have successively numbered equations in my document with the aid of the
field {seq eq}. The field results have grown successively from 1 to 10, then
suddenly jumped to 16, 17, etc. Upon deleting a previous equation, 16 updates
to 15, etc., but the jump of 6 persists. For investigation, I have eliminated
all the contents of the file but 2 equation number fields: one before the
jump, the other after the jump. The first results in 1, the second in 7. Both
field codes are identical. I can send this file to anyone who wants to check
it, but I do not how to attach a file to this message
