Bug in Word 2007/2010 ?

Hello,

Type the following line in Word 2007 or 2010.

O Brother.

Now click on Numbering or Bullets.

The letter O disappears.

I do not understand why. I tried so many things to solve this problem.
Please help me understand what is happening.

I have to format a large document and many of the sentences start with O,
and will be numbered. When Word deletes the O, the document becomes
corrupted. Do you think there is a way around it?

You could use a find/replace operation to temporarely change the single O's
into something which won't be substitued. Then after you added the lists,
you could undo the find/replace with another find/replace.

Yet if I give the file to others, and they reformat it, the O letters will be
accidentally removed and that will corrupt the file.

Teach users to apply a bulleted or numbered *style*, as appropriate; that seems
to work. You can use the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S) and type in the style
name. If you want to make use of built-in styles, List Number and List Bullet
are useful (and you can modify them to suit your needs).

List Bullet can be applied very easily, because it has a shortcut assigned (by
default): Ctrl+Shift+L.

The only way around this is to apply a style that includes numbering. For
example, if you modify Body Text to include numbering and then apply to the
paragraphs you want numbered, then it won't remove the O. To speed up the
operation, assign a keyboard shortcut to whichever style you use for
numbering the paragraphs. I suggest that you create a new style rather than
use an existing style.

Indeed, modifying Body Text may be less appropriate. :) However, using a
built-in numbered or bulleted style should work just fine.
