Bug: Microsoft Office Error Reporter

J

John Laudun

Is anybody else seeing the Office Error reporter lock up when it tries to
report an error? I've had Word go into "Application Not Responding" a couple
of times lately -- thank goodness only when I'm quitting, and then I notice
that not only is Word hanging around in my Dock, but so is the error
reporter, which also "reports" that it is Not Responding. So two
applications to Force Quite instead of one.

This report/question is not very useful unless you specify OS and Office
versions.

I have never seen this with Office 2004 (updated to 11.1.1) and OS 10.3.9.

Betcha money you are seeing this with some version of Tiger?

I too have been getting this same situation with Word 2004 and Tiger.
It is happening with a word document from a PC friend. I have been able
to isolate the problem to a font replacement issue, but only by luck -
once I opened an older version of the file from withing Word and then
did a compatibilty chech and found it was substituting 2 fonts.

I've seen it with Office 2004's Entourage 11.1 and OS 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 on a
couple occasions and both it and Entourage were not responding except to
force quit. No Repair Permissions problems found when I followed with Disk
Utility. I did do an Entourage database rebuild on two occasions.

I wonder if it has something to do with my firewall settings stopping
Entourage and the error reporter from calling home>

I work at a higher ed institution and I just had a faculty member send
me a document that manifested this same problem on my machine. I'm
running 10.4.2 with Office 11.1.1. However, I am in the process of
downloading Service Pack 2 for Office2004. I hope this helps. Attempting
to run a compatibility check revealed a font substitution issue. But,
when I searched the document for the font that was it was going to
replace, I didn't find that font in the document. Weird.

Good news! Service Pack 2 fixes the problem with the MS Error Reporter.
Now only if I could figure out what's wrong with the file itself.

Thanks very much, MS Mac BU team!

As the person who started this thread, I had enough confidence in your
Service Pack 2, Mac BU developers and quality assurance people that I
re-enabled my Microsoft Office Error Reporter, which I had disabled a week
or so ago.

So far SP2's Word, Entourage, and Excel are behaving perfectly with OS
10.4.2 and, of course, I have not experienced any problem yet with the Error
Reporting system.

What I have observed, however, seems to be more speed on my CPU-limited
733-mhz hardware while working with Office 2004. Again, thank you very
much.

As D. Largent and Vicente Valjalo, I came to this thread from the
perspective of experience in a system of higher education, in my case as a
full-time faculty member of 25 years.

I'm most respectful of the responsiveness of the members of the Microsoft
Mac Business Unit to the interests and needs of consumers.

Respectfully, Norm
