Bug observed when double click on underlined word(s)

I observed this bug in Word 2003. It looks like the only way to report a bug
is through telephone. So I am posting it here. Please follow these steps

1) Create a new word document.
2) Write some word(s) and underline them.
3) Double click on the same line in the empty space to the right side of the
words(s). The underline is elongated upto the point where the double click
was made.
4) Click somewhere else on the page and the elongated underline disappears.
This happens when double click anywhere on the same line as the underlined
word(s) and in the space to the right of end of the same line.
5) Do this again. Double click on the empty space to the right of the
word(s). A line appears again till the point where double clicked. Now press
'ctrl+a' so that all text on the page is selected.
6) Now click again somewhere in the page. The selection disappears, but the
underline still remains.

I can provide a video of this if required or if someone is not able to
reproduce the bug.

Prashanth

I can't reproduce that here in Word 2003. Do you have Click and Type
enabled? If not, how do you click on "empty space"?

Hi Prashanth,

I'm not sure I'm seeing this as a bug. You're using 1/2 of
the click and type feature (i.e. you're clicking, but you're
not typing) :)

With click and type enabled in Tools=>Options=>Edit steps 1-6 work.

When you use click and type and double click a spot on the page
text is not created at that point until you actually type or paste
just a 'visual indicator' of what you'd get if you did type at that
point.

In your example, when you clicked on the right of your initial line
Word was assuming you'd want to continue the current formatting
in effect at the last spot you typed.

When you double clicked in another spot in the page (a new paragraph)
Word created a spot for new text using the default ('normal') paragraph
style or other style you've set for the Click and type default in
Tools=>Options=>Edit.

If you had typed a single letter on the first line after double clicking
the underline would have remained when you double clicked on a
blank spot on the page.

For step 6, when you selected the text on the first, and only line
in the document with Ctrl+A in step 5 you put a 'hold' on the
first Click and type formatting (look at the undo list after you
double clicked at the second) but your typing changed the 'focus'
of the cursor in the word document so you don't see the previous
selection highlighted. You didn't do anything with the Ctrl+A
selection (i.e. ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard.

Hi Suzanne,
I was not too aware of the click and type feature. Bob's post answered the
query. Thanks for your help.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the exhaustive reply. I was not aware of the click and type
feature. I guess that explained the underline and my problem. For the first
timer it definitely looked like a bug. :)

cheers,
Prashanth
