BUG: Outlook 2007 Beta 2 custom search folders

Hi all,

I have an issue with custom search folders in Outlook 2007 Beta 2. I
categorized a message in the "Blue Category", which I first renamed to
"Customers".

[BACKGROUND]
I then created a rule so that messages from a specific person would
automatically be categorized as "Customers". I ran the rule on the existing
messages in my Inbox. This resulted in 4 messages being categorized as
"Customers"; 2 unread, and 2 read.

[ISSUE]
I then went on to create a custom search folder where I specified two
criteria:
- the message must be categorized as "Customers"
- the message must be unread

The search folder was empty, even though my Inbox contained the messages
described above. I then selected "Inbox" as the folder, instead of "Personal
Folders" and ensured that search subfolders was turned on. This made no
difference: messages did not show up.

If I remove the criterion that filters by category, all unread messages show
up. If I remove the criterion that filters only unread messages, no messages
show up. So, the issue is related to creating filters by the category of the
messages.

3 and let Outlook open for a while?

category search is working fine for me - rather than renaming blue, make a
new category and assign the color blue and see if it works. It could be
something goofy with the conversion from flags to color categories that is
messing it up.

I thought they switched the search folders to WDS?

I don't believe search folders use WDS and since it finds the unreads, it's
not a search issue but a problem with the search criteria.

BTW - are you using the category field on the General tab or creating it on
the advanced tab? Try Categories contains Blue or Categories Equals Blue
Category on the advanced tab. There appears to be some goofiness if you use
the Categories field on General - it doesn't seem to find color categories
on mail items - only posts.

It uses the same search engine as advanced find, which did not change. It's
slower, but search folders appear to be instant once the initial search is
finished because they cache the results and update as new items arrive.

That's the more choices tab BTW - not general.

BTW - are you using the category field on the General tab or creating it

Search folders use MAPI Restrictions. If you use a tool like OutlookSpy
(www.dimastr.com) you can actually view the MAPI restrictions used for any
search folder including the new All Tasks one that feeds the To-Do Bar.

Seems like not being able to create search folders using categories is a
known issue in B2.

I haven't tried it in code yet. In the UI you can only create a search
folder for email folders. In code you can create one for any folder type or
mixed folder types. As long as your search criteria are common to all types
you could create one for emails, contacts, tasks, etc. For example Subject.
If you search on that your search folder could hold all those types of
items. Think the Reminders folder, which is just another search folder.
