Bugs in Word 2007

As we continue our very detailed evaluation of the new Office 2007 suite of
programs we are beginning to find bugs in Word. Bug 1 - Launch Word - go to
Page setup and choose landscape and different odd and even page headers. On
the first page in the header section choose insert wordart and choose any of
the wordart styles. Type in your heading and then move out of the header
section into the body. Insert an object into the body, and after inserting
the object go to the 2nd page (even page). Choose insert header again and
type in a different heading for page 2 using wordart again. When you actually
insert the wordart item it compresses it up to being unreadable. If you then
select edit text and change the font size of the wordart and then size it
back to what it should have been that unscrambles it. You can also work
around it in the way that we do by inserting the object into the body of the
2nd page first and then going back to the header and doing it - this seems to
work first time. This was also a problem in earlier versions of Word.
Bug 2 - When you copy and paste special an Excel Chart into Word 2007, you
often get unexpected results. The chart will lose its background colours for
example. There doesn't seem to be a pattern or repeatable way of making this
happen, but happens at least once per week.
Bug 3: If you change the default word document type to .doc, the system does
not remember this - it constantly reverts back to docx.

We are sure there are many more issues in the product which we will pass on
for both Microsoft and others to comment on.

different default printer driver installed?

Bug 3: Are other options changes remembered correctly (i.e. is it ONLY the
file type)? Where are you changing the option?

Thank you for your comments. The printer driver is the latest driver from HP
for their HP4650 Colour Laserjet. As we have not chosen a printer at the
stage referred to in bug 1 or 2, we are not sure how this could be related,
however we have just changed the default printer to the PDF printer and the
same thing happens. Not sure the problem is related to that. As the printer
in word is either the default or the one that you choose when you go to
[print the bottom, would the document know about it before then?

The reason for suggesting the printer driver for 1+2, is that the printer
has the greatest effect on how Word displays a page. However, if you
selected a PDF driver, it seems less likely. But would you try another
(real) printer driver just to be sure.

Bug 3 needs confirmation that it is just that 1 setting as there are known
third party add-ins and utilities that stop Word from saving all setting
changes (Adobe Acrobat 7 and CCleaner are just 2 examples). Try changing the
default font or a compatibility option to see if it is remembered correctly.

Hi Bill,

I'm assuming it's the release rather than beta product you're testing on and on Windows XP?

On you issue #3, what rights do the users have and have you used any policy or deployment settings for Office 2007 to set the file
format default (Alt,T,O,S)? The change in file settings requires the ability to write to the registry and there are some registry
tools and some Word add-ins that prevent or replace some of those changes when you close Word.

That setting should apply to new documents, but doesn't change an already existing document, also if your template is a DOTX or DOTM
type then when you open your new document from that template it opens as Word 2007, rather than 'compatability mode' document,
although when you're saving your new document will default to follow your option preference.

If you run the Office Diagnostics from the Options=>Resource dialog does it find any issues?

FWIW, it may be a bit easier to allow discussion of these if the issues could be in separate messages in future <g>. I agree that
we're likely to find additional issues going forward

Hi Bill,

For Office 2007 the charting engine has been replaced and using Insert=>Chart, as a method brings up an Excel spreadsheet for the
data, for example. The older chart/graph engines are still supported.

Are the Excel worksheets and Word documents created originally in 2003 or 2007 versions?

When you use Paste Special, what format are you pasting?

Can you create a new Excel 2007 spreadsheet, create a chart and then Paste Special it into Word 2007 with the same result?

You can install any printer driver without having the printer physically
attached, and Word really must see a printer driver in order to lay out the
document correctly.

Thanks again - sorry there is no other driver to try other than Microsoft
Image (MSI). Only the single printer on this system and no network available
to test other printers. I have, however tested it on my daughters machine.
She has an HP G85 printer and is using Word 2003 (where I first discovered
this). Just tried it again and the same thing as I described in the issue
happens.

As for the saving of settings we have changed another setting and that seems
to have fixed it saving to doc format rather than docx - how strange. We then
took off the other changed setting and it seemed to remember the .doc
document type. How very bizarre.

So we seem to be left with the original issue only

I don't know whether it's a reflection of the quality of HP's drivers
or just of HP's dominance in the printer market, but probably 90% of
the posts here that complain about printer-driver-related glitches
involve HP products. Try installing an Epson or Canon driver and see
whether that makes a difference.

We are aware that we can install a printer driver without the printer being
physically attached. I think we have proven with our response to Bob that it
is not the printer driver. It is definitely a Word problem. Word sees the
default driver by default and that in our case is the HP CLJ 4650. Having
replicated the issue on a machine with an HP G85 and being in a position to
replicate it whenever we try it on any other machine, it is either in the
design of the product or it is a bug as earlier pointed out.

You can install any printer driver without having the printer physically
attached, and Word really must see a printer driver in order to lay out the
document correctly.

Thanks for your comments. As the drivers on the two HP printers are totally
different (they do not have a universal driver), we feel it is unlikely the
driver. Having said that we tried the pdf driver and still got the same
problem, which we mentioned earlier in the thread. This is definitely a Word
problem and has been for many releases now.

I don't know whether it's a reflection of the quality of HP's drivers
