build an Expression

Hi all,
I want somebody to please help me on how to build an expression that
will calculate the sum for a field within a given period of time. E.g Let
say from 1st March to 30th march in a field that contains data from January
to December. I know that to calculate the total sum for a field e.g sales
field, one can build an expression like this "=sum([sales])". I want to know
how to specify the date in the expresion.
