build the OLAP cube

N

Norman

I have accessed the enterprise options via the admin menu.
I want to build a OLAP cube.

Do I have to have SharePoint configured first?

I remember creating a OLAP administrator for the SQL server 2000 Analysis
Services.

In configuration of OLAP name and description it asks for the following
information.
Analysis Server: (I used the Server hostname).
Cube name: (I just made somthing up).
Cube description: (I just made somthing up).
Analysis Server
Extranet Address: (Not sure what this is or if it's been configured)

Can somebody please help.

Hi Norman,

You dont need to do anything with WSS.
in regards to the infoamtion:

Analysis Server: (I used the Server hostname).
- Should be the Analysis Server server name ( most times the server name
where AS resides)
Cube name: (I just made somthing up).
- Thats fine ( suggested would be ProjectServer) - this will add a
connection called ProjectServer
Cube description: (I just made somthing up).
- Thats fine
Extranet Address: (Not sure what this is or if it's been configured)
- You can leave this empty.

Hope this helps

Hi Marc,
thanks for your help.

I've tried your suggestions but get the error could not connect to the server.
Is there anyway I can determin were the AS resides? I thaought it was on the
SQL server.

Norman.

Hi Norman,

First I would check if Analysis Server is actually installed. Typically it
is installed on the same box than SQL Server. If you go the the SQL Server
Server and go to "Start" SQL Server link, there should also be a link called
"Analysis Services" this should give you a link the the Analysis Manager.
Check if you can see the Analysis Manager and see if you have any cubes
running.

If this is not the case, you will probabably need to install the Analysis
Server ( you can find this at the SQL Server CD. Install AS and try again.
Let me know if this worked
Thanks

Hi Marc,

I'm still having problems but I am slightly further forward.

I've checked the Analysis Manager which was installed but the was no server
registered. I have now registered the server, created the database and linked
the data source to the project server and the projectserver database.

There are no cubes created or running just a cube folder.

I have tried again to build the cube from the enterprise options via the
admin menu. I used the servers FQDN, the process connects to the server and
starts to build the cube but I now get a read only error.

"The cube scheduled to be built on 28/06/2006 at 09:48 failed.(-2147217911)
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only."

I hope that some of this makes some sense.

Thanks,

Norman.

PS please ignore my first attempt to post this reply I had some kind of PC
glitch.

hi Norman,

looks like that you dont have sufficient rights. Can you please put your
Project Server Service account into the OLAP Administrator group within the
DB Server and run the cube process in PWA again. This should solve your issue
Let me know how it went
Thanks

Hi Marc,

Sorry for being a pain!

Not sure what account the projectserver service account is so I've checked
what the projectserver services are using (local system or local service)

I've added local service into the OLAP Administrator group on the server
(The server has both ProjectServer and SQL Server 2000 running on it).

Unfortunately I am still getting the same error;

The cube scheduled to be built on 30/06/2006 at 10:53 failed.
(-2147217911) Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

Your help is really appreciated.

Norman.

Ho Norman,

No trouble at all.
You will need to Service account that you required during the install.
Typically you need 2 service accounts, one wss service account and one
project server service account. ( these are usually domain accounts). It is
possible to only use one account for the isntallation but not best practices.

It is important that you get the Project Server service account and make him
OLAP Administrator in The DB Server and the App Server ( if you run on 2
servers). Once you have done this please run the cube again and let me know
if it solved the issue
Thanks
Marc

Hi Mark,

Still no joy!

The ProjectServer was not configured with WSS so there is no WSS service
account.

I think we may be going round in circles and it's probably my fault, let me
tell you exactly how I've arrived at my current situation.

When I first started working here back in March I was tasked with looking at
the current installation of ProjectServer 2003.

The Server did not have the analysis services installed, required service
pack 2 and there were no details of the configuration/installation and
usernames and passwords etc.

As my knowledge on ProjectServer was limited and the Project Team required
access to the current ProjectServer. I decided to start a fresh single server
installation without WSS.

I installed ProjectServer and SQL 2000 on another server following the
installation guide taking notes at every step. Once complete I detached the
ProjectServer database from the first install of ProjectServer and copied the
it to the new installation of ProjectServer, attached the ProjectServer
database and install SP2

This seemed to work quite well the users could access their projects etc.
One thing did change the ProjectServer admin account reverted back the
account used on the first installation of ProjectServer (Obviously associated
with the databse rather than ProjectServer).

We decided we could live with that until it was decided that we would like
to use the Analysis Service and build an OLAP cube and the rest you know.

I'm sorry if the way I've went about this has caused any undue confussion.
If there is better way of importing the database into an new build of
ProjectServer I will gladly start from scratch again. I thought it would be
better to let you know how we have arrived at our current situation.

Kind Regards,

Norman.

Hi Norman,

thanks for the history. This helps.
So from what I understand, the OLAP Cube has not been build at all on your
new install. hmmm somehow I have the feeling that it has something to do with
the ProjectServer service account. You said that this is a single server
installation? Have you moved the OLAP repsoitory from the access to the SQL
Database? ( it is one of the steps in the isntallation guide), if not please
do so. Try to run the cube, if no luck then I would re/create the COM+.

Microsoft deliveres a tool which you can find on the Server under --
":\Program Files\Microsoft Office Project Server 2003\BIN\1033"
The tool is called "PSComPlus.exe"

Please run this tool but only tick on the "Analysis Services (OLAP) Access
identity. ( leave the WSS identity unticked).
You will need to have your Project Server Service account ( please use
domain\username) and password. Please make sure that the username and
password is correct, then click on the Create/Update COM+ Apps.
After a couple of seconds a dialog window will appear telling you that the
COM components are now running.

Then go the Analysis Server and check that there is no Project Server Cube (
obiously not, but please check anyway) and if there is, please delete the
connection to Project Server.
After this please try to run the OLAP creation via PWA again and lets cross
our fingers that it works. :)

These are the typical steps that I take when a customer has a problem with
the OLAP build. First I check the the service accounts have enough access,
which we have done. Then I check that the connection between App Server and
DB Server is working. Since we have a single Server we should have no
problems. Then I check the COM+ components. Usually this fixes the issue. Let
me know if this worked.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am getting the following error message. I have not run PSComPlus yet. I
did have to highly manipulate adding the web page to be a part of the OLAP
Group Administrators. If I run PSComPlus should the access problems and
errors below be eliminated?
