bullet characters

I am typing a document and am trying to change one section to a bulleted list
(instead of separate paragraphs). I've blocked the section, gone to format -
bullets, and selected my character, but when I hit OK, a different bullet
character is inserted. I have tried several times to fix, but to no avail.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Are you using a font that does not have the character that you have selected?
