I have had this issue going back through several versions of Office
(possibly even pre-Office X), on a number of different machines. I have at
least one friend who has the same frustration, and we've never mixed any
software on our machines.
Often, when I hit the bullet or number button in the toolbar to start a
list, my entire document gets bulleted or numbered. Oddly, hitting Undo
"un-lists" all but the desired paragraph, leaving me where I wanted to be in
the first place. (The expected behavior for Undo would be to completely
unlist everything, so this is better but stranger.) This means that I can
use lists, but have to wait through the document re-draw as it lists all the
paragraphs, hit undo, then wait through the re-draw again as it unlists all
the paragraphs except the one my cursor is in.
In a technical document, with a lot of different step procedures and bullet
lists, this becomes unbearably cumbersome very quickly. Adding to the
problem is that it is not 100% consistent behavior, and occasionally shows
up in other areas (such as applying styles, setting Restart Numbering,
etc.). In other words, for these features, the same thing happens: the
entire document is affected instead of the selected paragraph, then an Undo
fixes the problem.
I have tried using the Office Uninstaller, deleting all the Word-related
files I could find in the Preferences folder in all Libraries, but the
problem persists. Given that I have had it across years of different Macs
(occasionally with complete fresh System installs), different versions of
Office, and know someone that has had it for as long, it seems like a Word
bug. But I'm surprised that I don't see it showing up here.
Anyone know of a fix for this? Or at least an iron-clad guaranteed way to
delete anything that might be corrupting my Word and do a completely fresh
install?
Thanks,
Allen
